“Residents Urged to Exercise Caution After Black Bear Attack”

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) and the Village of Cumberland are urging residents to exercise caution following an incident where a black bear injured a person on Sunday. According to the BCCOS, two hikers with an unleashed dog were attacked by a family of black bears near the Bevan Wetlands. One of the hikers sustained injuries and was hospitalized but has since been discharged. The BCCOS confirmed that the bear’s attack was defensive and opted not to search for the animal, although ongoing monitoring of the area will be conducted.

In response, the Village of Cumberland took to social media to advise visitors on being bear-aware, emphasizing the importance of looking out for signs of bear presence such as fresh scat and tracks. Hikers are encouraged to travel in groups, keep their dogs on leashes, carry bear spray, and make noise while navigating through wilderness areas.

Any instances of aggressive bear behavior or encounters between humans and wildlife should be promptly reported to the Conservation Officer Service’s 24-hour RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
