French authorities conducted a raid at the Paris headquarters of a prominent social media platform, referred to as X, on Tuesday. The raid was part of a preliminary investigation looking into various allegations, including the dissemination of child sexual abuse images and deepfakes. In response to the ongoing investigation, Musk’s space exploration company, SpaceX, recently acquired xAI. This acquisition will lead to the integration of Grok, X, and Musk’s satellite communication venture, Starlink.
The French probe originated in January the previous year, initiated by the cybercrime unit of the Paris prosecutors’ office. It was prompted by allegations from a French legislator suggesting that biased algorithms on X may have distorted the platform’s automated data processing system. The investigation expanded following instances where Grok allegedly denied the Holocaust, a criminal offense in France, and distributed sexually explicit deepfakes.
Prosecutors are now examining potential involvement in possessing and circulating pornographic images of minors, sexually explicit deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, and manipulation of automated data processing systems as part of an organized group.
Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino have been summoned for voluntary interviews in April. The investigation also involves X employees who have been requested to provide witness testimonies that same week.
X, in a statement on the platform, defended itself against the accusations, stating that the French prosecutors were targeting its French entity and employees in an attempt to pressure the senior management based in the United States.
Musk responded to the investigation by sharing a statement on X, denouncing the actions as a political attack. The tech mogul expressed concerns about the disregard for international procedures in obtaining evidence and defending X’s rights.
