A groundbreaking research project led by two graduate students at the University of Windsor is revolutionizing the tracking of nocturnal bird migration in Canada. Natalie Emerick and Madison Bygrove have deployed 100 acoustic recorders spanning from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, capturing and categorizing bird sounds using advanced AI technology called Motus Audio.
These 3D-printed recorders, equipped with microphones pointed towards the night sky, gather the diverse calls and flight noises of migrating birds. Previously, studying nocturnal bird communication and behavior was challenging, but with this innovative approach, real-time monitoring has become feasible.
The researchers emphasize the importance of citizen participation in hosting these recorders, revealing unexpected insights from various locations across the country. The project’s success is attributed to technological advancements that streamline data analysis, saving countless hours of manual processing.
By collaborating with existing Canadian migration monitoring networks and engaging a mix of participants, Emerick and Bygrove aim to explore the impact of artificial light on bird navigation and communication. As they refine their algorithms for species identification, they anticipate gaining valuable insights during the upcoming fall migration season.
Motus Audio, stemming from a decade-old technology initiative, has enabled this unprecedented “audio curtain” that spans Canada. Ecologists like Ryan Norris are optimistic about the project’s potential to illuminate bird movements through critical habitats like the boreal forest, shedding light on population dynamics and conservation challenges.
Norris acknowledges the complexity of identifying bird species solely based on flight sounds, highlighting the significance of this research in understanding migratory patterns and addressing bird population declines.
