“Trump Announces Trade Deal with India, Tariffs Slashed”

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that a trade agreement has been reached with India. The deal involves a significant reduction in U.S. tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18% in exchange for India’s commitment to lower trade barriers, cease purchasing Russian oil, and potentially buy oil from the U.S. and Venezuela. Trump, following a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stated on social media that the reduced reciprocal tariff would be implemented immediately as per Modi’s request.

An official from the White House informed Reuters that the United States would also be eliminating a punitive 25% duty on all imports from India related to its Russian oil purchases, which was in addition to the existing 25% reciprocal tariff rate.

In addition, Modi pledged to purchase over $500 billion worth of U.S. energy, technology, agricultural products, and more, as highlighted by Trump. Modi expressed gratitude towards Trump for the trade agreement, emphasizing the positive impact it would have on Made in India products.

A landmark new trade deal between India and the European Union cuts tariffs on nearly 97% of European goods, including cars, with expectations to double EU exports to India by 2032. The agreement also facilitates easier access for highly skilled Indian professionals to work in Europe.

India heavily relies on oil imports, with approximately 90% of its needs covered through imports. The shift to purchasing more affordable Russian oil has aided in reducing import costs, particularly after the imposition of sanctions on Russian energy exports following the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

Recent data indicates a decline in India’s purchases of Russian oil, with projections suggesting a decrease from around 1.2 million barrels per day in January to about one million in February and 800,000 in March, as reported by Reuters.
