A young child sustained severe injuries following an encounter with a coyote at a playground in Whitby, Ont., where multiple sightings have been reported, according to Durham police. The incident occurred at Vanier Park on Sunday evening when a two-year-old boy was attacked by the coyote. The child was bitten on the face before his guardian and onlookers intervened to scare the animal away. He was subsequently taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after the playground incident, authorities responded to reports of another distressed coyote near Harriet and Annes streets. The police located the animal and safely removed it from the area without any reported injuries.
Durham police, in collaboration with the Town of Whitby, local animal services, and the Durham Region Health Department, are actively investigating these incidents, monitoring coyote activities, and implementing measures to prevent potential future encounters. The police emphasized the rarity of aggressive coyote behavior toward humans and advised residents to exercise caution, especially in areas like parks, playgrounds, trails, and natural settings during peak coyote activity hours.
In a recent update, it was disclosed that another child in Whitby had been hospitalized due to a coyote bite in a public field near a forested area. The Durham Region has experienced numerous reported coyote incidents, prompting a public advisory urging caution, particularly for pedestrians and pet owners using public spaces.
According to the town’s online dashboard, there have been 96 coyote sightings in Whitby within the past month. Similar concerns have been raised in surrounding Toronto communities, with instances of coyote attacks on children leading to public warnings by law enforcement. In response to rising coyote concerns, Toronto authorities developed a new strategy to address such incidents.
To ensure public safety from coyotes, the police offered several guidelines, including maintaining a safe distance if encountering a coyote, supervising children outdoors, following posted guidelines in affected areas, avoiding known coyote habitats, eliminating food attractants, and knowing how to react when encountering a coyote. Residents were encouraged to promptly report any coyote sightings to animal services for further action.
