“Severe Storm Hits Newfoundland: Evacuations, Outages, and Fires”

A severe storm sweeping through Newfoundland and Labrador has caused power outages affecting more than 9,000 residents and forced families in the southern Avalon community of Trepassey to evacuate due to rising waters. The storm also resulted in a fish plant fire that destroyed the structure before crews could respond.

Mayor Wanda Waddleton reported that two families in Trepassey were evacuated from the lower coast area for safety reasons, with more potential evacuations looming. The town’s breakwater, damaged in a previous storm, remains unrepaired, leaving 29 residents vulnerable to being cut off from the harbor.

In Cape St. Mary’s, some of the strongest winds were recorded, with gusts reaching 172 km/h. The fire at the St. Mary’s fish plant engulfed the building, prompting swift action from local fire crews. Mayor Steve Ryan described the unprecedented wind conditions, causing damage to properties and infrastructure.

The storm has also caused widespread power outages and heightened the risk of coastal flooding along several peninsulas. Newfoundland Power reported over 9,000 customers without electricity as of Tuesday evening. Environment Canada issued weather alerts for heavy winds, rainfall, and potential storm surges in various regions of the province.

Residents are advised to exercise caution while driving due to hazardous road conditions. Environment Canada forecasts continued stormy weather with high winds and significant rainfall. Coastal areas face the risk of storm surges and flooding, with waves reaching up to 12 meters in some locations.

Parts of Newfoundland are expected to receive substantial rainfall, while central and western areas may experience snowfall. Labrador is also under a special weather statement, anticipating heavy rain and strong winds. Local officials are closely monitoring road and infrastructure integrity as the storm continues to impact communities.
