“Canada to Debut at Eurovision 2027”

Canada is set to make its debut in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, as announced by CBC/Radio-Canada and the European Broadcasting Union shortly after CBC’s full membership confirmation. Marie-Philippe Bouchard, CBC/Radio-Canada’s president, expressed excitement in bringing this major music event to Canadians on Canada Day.

The upcoming 71st edition of Eurovision will be hosted by Bulgaria next year, known as a platform for songwriters, singers, and musicians. The contest, famous for its extravagant performances, pyrotechnics, and unique costumes, has garnered significant Canadian interest.

In a recent competition, Canada ranked among the top three countries in the “Rest of the World” vote and had a substantial presence at the event in Vienna, Austria. Martin Green, the Eurovision Song Contest director, welcomed CBC/Radio-Canada to the Eurovision family, emphasizing the event’s global appeal.

Notably, Céline Dion won the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland in 1988, kickstarting her successful career. Other Canadians like Natasha St-Pier and La Zarra have also participated in the competition over the years. However, the event has faced controversies, such as the boycott by several countries earlier this year over Israel’s involvement during the conflict in Gaza.

Despite the challenges, Canada’s entry marks the first new country to join Eurovision since Australia in 2015. CBC/Radio-Canada will announce details on selecting Canada’s representative for the competition later this year.
