“Stunning Northern Lights Show Expected Tonight”

Canadians may witness a stunning northern lights show tonight as the sun has released multiple fast-moving particles towards Earth. In recent days, the sun has been active, with sunspots emitting magnetic energy and three coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These CMEs are rapidly traveling through the solar wind towards Earth and could potentially merge into what is known as a “cannibal” CME.

As these particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, the mesmerizing northern lights, or aurora borealis, may be visible. While typically seen in northern latitudes, a strong enough CME could extend the display further south. An example of this was the May 10, 2024, event where the northern lights were visible as far south as the Caribbean due to a cannibal CME.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has forecasted a significant geomagnetic storm for tonight and into Friday. Geomagnetic storms are graded on a scale ranging from G1 to G5. The SWPC anticipates combined CME arrival by mid-afternoon EDT on June 4, with potential G3 storm levels thereafter, continuing into the evening and possibly overnight of June 5.

Predicting the northern lights’ appearance is challenging, but the SWPC expresses a reasonable level of confidence in its arrival on Earth, although the intensity remains uncertain. The SWPC warns that the intensity may reach up to G3 storm levels, with a possibility of G4.

To catch a glimpse of the northern lights, several factors need to align. The auroral hole, along which the CME particles travel, must dip southward, with visibility extending farther south as it does so. Additionally, the storm must coincide with nighttime darkness. Optimal viewing conditions include clear skies away from city lights, as darker skies enhance visibility. Using a phone to capture photographs of the lights, even if not visible to the naked eye, is recommended.

For those interested in tracking the aurora’s visibility from their location, apps like Aurora Now can provide real-time information. To enhance the viewing experience, observing the western sky after sunset may reveal a beautiful conjunction of Jupiter and Venus.
