Controversy in Muskoka as Lions Roar in Cottage Country

Residents in Ontario’s Muskoka cottage country were surprised by the sound of lions roaring last summer, sparking a debate among locals about the presence of exotic animals at the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Rosseau. Some residents urged the sanctuary to focus on native wildlife rather than housing seven African lions temporarily.

The sanctuary’s executive director, Linda Glimps, revealed that the request to host the lions came from A Humane World for Animals, a non-profit organization, seeking a temporary home for the lions rescued from a Quebec zoo. Despite the controversy, Glimps did not rule out the possibility of accepting lions in the future.

Secrecy surrounded the relocation of the lions due to ongoing legal issues, with neighbors only informed shortly before their arrival. Concerns were raised by residents like Carolyn Pearce, who experienced disrupted sleep from the lions’ roaring and had to temporarily relocate due to health reasons.

Hap Wilson, a resident living near the sanctuary, supported the rehabilitation work but suggested alternative sites for the lion enclosure to avoid conflicts with neighbors. Glimps emphasized that the sanctuary would carefully consider future requests to house exotic animals and highlighted the benefits of the new enclosures funded by a third party.

The Township of Muskoka Lakes is currently reviewing the enclosures, focusing on the presence of sea cans, which were built without proper permits. The decision on whether the structures constitute an expansion of the sanctuary is pending.

As the community navigates the aftermath of the lion episode, both residents and sanctuary officials are striving for better communication and mutual understanding in potential future situations involving exotic animals.
