Paris prosecutor announced on Saturday that two new suspects have been formally charged in connection with the theft of the crown jewels from the Louvre museum. The prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, disclosed that a 37-year-old suspect is facing charges of theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy, while a 38-year-old woman has been accused of being an accomplice. Both individuals have been detained and have denied any involvement in the crime.
These latest arrests come after five individuals were apprehended by the police earlier in the week, with one of them identified through DNA evidence. Additionally, two men, aged 34 and 39 from Aubervilliers, were charged earlier in the week with theft by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy. Prosecutor Laure Beccuau mentioned that the suspects provided vague statements and only partially admitted to their roles. It is believed that these two men were the ones who forcibly entered the Apollo Gallery. One of them was intercepted at Charles-de-Gaulle Airport with a one-way ticket to Algeria, and his DNA matched samples discovered on a scooter used during the escape.
The identities and detailed backgrounds of the arrested individuals have not been disclosed, in adherence to French law which mandates the confidentiality of investigative information to safeguard police operations and protect the privacy rights of victims. Only the prosecutor is authorized to divulge information about the case, and any breaches of confidentiality can lead to legal action.
