“Climate Change Worsening Allergy Seasons Across Canada”

As the weather warms up, Canadians are experiencing the familiar symptoms of seasonal allergies: headaches, congestion, itchy eyes, and runny noses. Allergy experts note that allergy seasons are becoming more severe and prolonged due to factors like climate change. Dr. Moshe Ben-Shoshan from the Montreal Children’s Hospital confirms the start of allergy season, with an increase in patients presenting symptoms like hay fever and asthma due to higher pollen levels.

Research indicates that climate change is the primary driver behind worsening allergy seasons, leading to longer and more intense periods of pollen. Factors such as pollution, carbon dioxide levels, and light pollution in urban areas contribute to the increase in allergens. Studies have shown a significant rise in pollen levels in North America and other regions, with a direct correlation to rising temperatures.

In British Columbia, particularly in Vancouver and Victoria, tree pollen allergies are expected to spike this spring, with Aerobiology Research Laboratories reporting elevated levels since late January. The West Coast climate accelerates the release of allergenic pollen types like birch and oak. These cities consistently rank among the most challenging allergy environments due to their extended pollen seasons.

To manage seasonal allergies, experts recommend a combination of prevention measures, modern medications, and emerging treatments. Over-the-counter products such as antihistamines, nasal sprays, and eye drops can help alleviate symptoms temporarily. Desensitization therapy, which introduces small amounts of allergens to the body over time, is the only treatment that modifies the allergy itself. New desensitization treatments like sublingual immunotherapy tablets offer long-term tolerance to allergens and can be administered at home.

For severe cases, targeted biologic drugs may be an option to block specific immune responses causing allergic reactions. It is essential for allergy sufferers to identify their triggers through testing by an allergist and rule out any underlying health conditions mimicking allergy symptoms. Managing seasonal allergies effectively requires a tailored approach based on individual triggers and symptoms.
