“Ontario Cracks Down on Ticket Scalpers Despite Company Challenges”

The Ontario government has initiated actions against ticket scalpers and resale platforms to ensure compliance with recent regulations that limit ticket resale prices to face value. Despite some platforms still listing tickets above their original price, Minister Stephen Crawford stated that inspections are ongoing, targeting both small vendors and major companies like StubHub and SeatGeek.

Enforced as part of Ontario’s provincial budget, the rule prohibits selling tickets for more than their initial purchase price. In response, FIFA withdrew resale World Cup tickets for Toronto games, and Ticketmaster adjusted its site to prevent listings above face value.

The current enforcement phase may involve various measures like phone calls, record requests, site visits, and enforcement actions, including fines. Customers can report violations to Consumer Protection Ontario, with fines ranging from $3,000 to $250,000 for non-compliance.

Despite the crackdown, some companies continue to sell tickets above face value. While companies like SeatGeek and Vivid Seats claim to be working towards compliance, StubHub faces challenges in determining compliance for older listings. Viagogo’s government affairs director expressed the need for clearer guidelines pre-enforcement.

Minister Crawford emphasized collaboration with companies for compliance adjustments but warned of potential penalties for non-compliant entities. Vass Bednar from the Canadian SHIELD Institute acknowledged the time needed for compliance but stressed the importance of swift enforcement to address public concerns.

Some experts raise concerns over enforcement challenges, suggesting that restrictions may drive transactions to unofficial channels. However, Bednar believes the new regulations will curb excessive pricing practices, shifting consumer expectations regarding ticket resale norms.
