“Canada Allocates $7M Aid to Hurricane-Hit Caribbean”

Canada has allocated $7 million in humanitarian aid for Caribbean nations impacted by Hurricane Melissa, according to Randeep Sarai, the Member of Parliament responsible for overseeing the country’s foreign aid efforts. Out of this total amount, $5 million will be directed towards providing critical assistance through emergency response organizations and healthcare providers, while the remaining $2 million will be channeled to the United Nations World Food Program to aid in the distribution of essential supplies in Jamaica.

Sarai emphasized that Canada stands ready to dispatch emergency relief items from its stockpile through the Red Cross if requested by the affected countries. The focus is on addressing immediate requirements, with a commitment to supporting the Caribbean region in its recovery phase following the devastating impact of the Category 5 hurricane, which has resulted in numerous fatalities in Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti.

Furthermore, Ottawa has previously funded initiatives designed to assist nations like Jamaica in preparing for natural disasters by enhancing emergency planning and logistical capabilities. Canada is also actively engaged in efforts to revamp global institutions to enable Caribbean countries to invest in climate-resilient infrastructure.

The Canadian government’s pledge of financial support for hurricane-affected nations in the Caribbean underscores its solidarity with the region during this challenging period.
