“Grant Avenue Studio Marks 50 Years as Music Industry Icon”

Grant Avenue Studio, a renowned recording studio in Hamilton, is set to commemorate 50 years in the music industry. Established in 1976 by Daniel Lanois, Bob Lanois, and Bob Doidge, the studio is housed in a converted Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. The studio has been a hub for top talent from around the globe. In 2023, Mike Bruce, along with Debbie Bruce and Marco Montano, took over ownership of the studio.

Describing the studio as a “living museum,” Bruce emphasized the rich history and unique charm of the place. Over the years, Grant Avenue Studio has attracted musicians from various genres and backgrounds, drawn by its historical significance and reputation. Notable artists such as Gordon Lightfoot, Johnny Cash, and Brian Eno have contributed to the studio’s legacy.

Reflecting on the studio’s evolution, Jamie Tennant, a local music enthusiast, likened Grant Avenue Studio to a “rolling stone” that has gained momentum over the decades. Despite minimal updates since its inception in the 1970s and ’80s, the studio retains its original character, including unique features like sand-filled window wells for soundproofing.

Bruce highlighted the diverse range of talent that has graced the studio, from opera singers to indie artists. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Grant Avenue Studio plans to continue its “Grant Avenue Studio Presents” series, showcasing local artists in intimate YouTube concerts. The studio’s vintage MCI JH-500C console, reminiscent of iconic rock albums, adds to its allure for musicians seeking a blend of history and cutting-edge technology.

Looking ahead, Grant Avenue Studio has lined up a series of special events, including an anniversary party, museum exhibition, and a music contest as part of the Supercrawl festival. Bruce expressed pride in the studio’s longevity, positioning it as one of the oldest continuously operating studios in Canada, marking a significant milestone in the arts industry.
