“16-Year Wait: Canadian Astronaut Reflects on Moon Voyage”

Jeremy Hansen had been patiently waiting for 16 years for his chance to travel to space, and the opportunity finally arrived. Sitting down with CBC News at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, Hansen reflected on his mission. Initially recruited in 2009 alongside David Saint-Jacques, Hansen had dedicated years to training and preparations in Houston, never imagining his mission would entail a journey around the moon.

While expressing his wish for an earlier space venture, Hansen acknowledged the shifts in NASA’s space program, leading to delays and a different trajectory. Despite the challenges, he emphasized the valuable experiences gained throughout his journey.

On April 1, Hansen found himself atop NASA’s powerful Space Launch System (SLS) rocket with fellow crew members Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, heading towards the moon. The exhilarating launch, reminiscent of the Apollo era’s Saturn V rocket, was a highlight for Hansen, who savored every moment without dwelling on the past wait.

Addressing concerns about space sickness, Hansen shared his fortunate avoidance of it during the flight. However, he did encounter discomfort due to bodily fluid shifts in microgravity, mitigated by wearing a thigh cuff to regulate blood flow.

During the Artemis II test mission, the crew faced challenges such as managing spacecraft lighting to avoid glare, navigating the water system intricacies, and adapting to microgravity effects. Hansen humorously recounted incidents like water bag mishaps and improvised solutions like covering Earth’s brightness with a t-shirt.

Reflecting on the return journey’s reentry and readjustment to Earth’s gravity, Hansen appreciated the short-duration mission’s unique experiences and the human connections made during the spaceflight. Despite the technical hurdles, he highlighted the collective human experience as the most memorable aspect of the mission.
