Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Halifax before traveling to the United States for talks with President Donald Trump to seek a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Carney expressed optimism about achieving a fair and lasting peace under Zelenskyy’s leadership and pledged an additional $2.5 billion in economic assistance for Ukraine. The aid package includes $1.6 billion in loan guarantees to international financial institutions and support for the International Monetary Fund.

During his Canadian visit, Zelenskyy provided an update on diplomatic efforts with the U.S. to address the ongoing conflict following Russia’s invasion. He is scheduled to present a 20-point peace plan to Trump in Florida. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s defenses and advancing the negotiation process, criticizing Russia for delaying progress.

Carney praised Zelenskyy’s commitment to peace and acknowledged the bravery of the Ukrainian people facing Russian aggression. Security guarantees for Ukraine and economic agreements will be key topics in the upcoming discussions between Zelenskyy and Trump. The territorial disputes in the Donbas region, where Russia demands Ukrainian concessions, remain unresolved.

Zelenskyy expressed openness to creating a demilitarized zone in exchange for reciprocal actions from Russia, aiming to finalize a comprehensive agreement. Despite challenges, progress has been made in recent talks between the U.S. and Ukraine.
