Following the tragic death of a newborn discovered in a bus shelter in Longueuil, Que., authorities have apprehended a woman in connection with the incident.
The infant was found in a bus shelter situated near Briggs Street on Chambly Road.
During a press briefing, Jacqueline Pierre, a spokesperson for the Longueuil police, announced the arrest of a 33-year-old woman late Monday morning. Investigators are currently assessing the woman’s mental and physical well-being.
Although the police have not confirmed the woman’s relationship to the baby, Pierre mentioned the possibility of charging her with infanticide.
According to the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie, the baby was discovered naked, still attached to the placenta, and suffering from severe cold.
Upon discovery, the baby was unconscious, prompting immediate resuscitation efforts that continued en route to the hospital.
Authorities are primarily focused on the well-being of the 33-year-old woman detained following the baby’s death.

The SPAL noted that immediate first aid was administered to the infant, who was swiftly transported to the hospital.
The police urged the public to steer clear of the area as they conducted an operation, with a command post established on-site.
By 8 a.m., traffic was restricted on Briggs Street eastbound and Chambly Road northbound.
Mayor highlights similarities with recent case
Addressing the distressing abandonment and demise of the newborn, Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier expressed profound concern.
She mentioned that authorities are actively investigating the incident, which bears resemblances to a recent case but with differing outcomes.
Earlier this month, a newborn was discovered on a doorstep along Bourgeoys Street in Longueuil, wrapped in a blanket with the umbilical cord still intact.
In efforts to identify a person of interest, the police released footage showing an individual carrying what appeared to be a baby while walking down a sidewalk.
Authorities confirm that the two incidents are unrelated
