“Victory in Succession” Wins Big at 98th Oscars

“Victory in Succession” emerged as the standout performer at the latest Academy Awards, clinching the coveted best picture Oscar along with five additional accolades. Initially, Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” had taken the lead with a groundbreaking 16 nominations, triumphing in four categories.

In a memorable moment, Michael B. Jordan, the star of “Sinners,” secured the best actor award on his debut nomination, receiving a thunderous standing ovation from the audience. Additionally, Jessie Buckley, renowned for her portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet,” continued her winning streak from the 2026 award season by adding an Oscar to her collection after triumphing at the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Actor, and BAFTA Film awards.

Canadian talents shone bright as well during the eventful night. Toronto director Maggie Kang accepted the best animated feature Oscar for “KPop Demon Hunters,” while Canadian production designers Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau, along with Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey, took home Oscars for their contributions to “Frankenstein.”

Furthermore, Montreal filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski clinched the best animated short film award for “The Girl Who Cried Pearls.” Notably, “One Battle After Another,” beyond its best picture and best supporting actor triumphs, secured Paul Thomas Anderson’s inaugural wins for best adapted screenplay and directing, in addition to victories in the editing and casting categories.

“Sinners” amassed four awards, with Ryan Coogler honored for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw becoming the first racialized woman to win the best cinematography award. The Toronto-filmed “Frankenstein” also captured three prestigious awards.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, recognized exceptional talent, with notable winners like Michael B. Jordan, Jessie Buckley, Amy Madigan, Sean Penn, Paul Thomas Anderson, and many others. The event showcased a diverse range of outstanding cinematic achievements celebrated on a global stage.
