The arena, which had been without a major hockey team for a decade and last hosted the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks over thirty years ago, has found a new resident in the PWHL’s Vancouver Goldeneyes. This transition has been in progress for several months, culminating in the Goldeneyes becoming the first team in the league to have its dedicated arena, providing players with exclusive access to the ice and training facilities.
The arena now boasts a fresh look with a new logo at center ice, a modern video board suspended from the ceiling, and a newly equipped gym for player use. In anticipation of the upcoming game, rally towels were placed on every seat for the expected crowd of over 15,000 individuals, setting a new attendance record for a PWHL team’s home arena.
A merchandise store near the entrance was stocked with jerseys and sweaters, allowing fans to purchase personalized jerseys with their favorite player’s name right from the start, a rare offering in women’s professional sports.
The debut game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET, where the Goldeneyes will face off against the Seattle Torrent, marking the beginning of a new era for both franchises and potentially sparking a new west coast rivalry.
