“Tragic Loss: Winnipeg High School Football Player Dies After Neck Injury”

A Winnipeg high school football player who sustained a severe neck injury in a game two weeks ago has passed away. Stephanie Ciaralli announced on Facebook that Darius Hartshorne, also known as Dee, had succumbed to his injuries. Ciaralli expressed deep sorrow for his suffering over the past 12 days but also pride in the young man he had become.

Hartshorne, a Grade 12 student playing for the Sisler Spartans, was injured during a game against the Tec Voc Hornets when he was tackled while returning the opening kickoff on October 17. The Winnipeg School Division superintendent, Matt Henderson, extended support to the affected schools and emphasized the importance of assisting students, staff, and the family in this difficult time.

Described as a well-liked and valued member of the Spartans, head coach Sean Esselmont praised Hartshorne as one of the most genuine and exceptional young men he had coached. The team paid tribute to Hartshorne by wearing decals featuring his jersey number and prominently displaying his jersey at games.

Updates on Hartshorne’s condition revealed that he had been taken out of an induced coma but was not waking up on his own. Despite initial hopeful signs post-surgery, his situation had deteriorated.

Political figures, including Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan and Premier Wab Kinew, offered condolences to Hartshorne’s loved ones, classmates, and the Sisler community. Councilor Vivian Santos also remembered Hartshorne for his kindness, strength, and compassion towards others.

Hartshorne, who recently turned 17 while in the hospital, received heartfelt messages from the community, expressing sadness over the tragic incident. Ciaralli, his caregiver, expressed her deep longing to bring him back home in a poignant message following his birthday.
