A well-respected rabbi, a survivor of the Holocaust, and a married couple who perished while trying to halt the violence were among the 15 victims of a tragic mass shooting that occurred at Bondi Beach in Australia during a Hanukkah celebration. The identities of the victims have not yet been officially disclosed by authorities, but details have been shared by family and friends. By the end of Monday, nine victims had been identified, with an additional three named on Tuesday. The incident resulted in around 40 individuals being hospitalized, including two police officers and four children.
According to reports, the attack was carried out by a father and son, with the victims’ ages ranging from 10 to 87. The 50-year-old alleged gunman was fatally shot by the police. Here is what we currently know about some of the victims:
Boris and Sofia Gurman: Boris Gurman, 69, and Sofia Gurman, 61, lost their lives while attempting to confront one of the gunmen. Dashcam footage circulating on social media shows the couple standing up to one of the attackers. Boris was seen trying to disarm the gunman before the situation escalated tragically. The couple’s family expressed pride in their bravery and selflessness.
Edith Brutman: Edith Brutnam, a cherished member of the Sydney Jewish community, was remembered as a woman of integrity who exemplified humanity in her everyday actions.
Matilda: A 10-year-old girl, Matilda, tragically lost her life during the shooting. Described as a bright and spirited child, she brought joy to those around her. Her family and community mourn her deeply.
Rabbi Eli Schlanger: Assistant rabbi at Chabad Bondi, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, was known for his kindness and dedication to serving others. His tragic death has left a profound impact on the community.
Peter Meagher: Retired policeman and rugby enthusiast Peter Meagher was fatally wounded while working as a freelance photographer at the event. He was a beloved figure at the Randwick Rugby Club.
Dan Elkayam: French national Dan Elkayam, in his late 20s, lost his life in the shootings. He was known for his technical support work with NBC Universal and his involvement with the Rockdale Ilinden Football Club.
Reuven Morrison: A victim identified as Reuven Morrison, 62, was a successful businessman who dedicated himself to charitable causes, including supporting Chabad of Bondi.
Alex Kleytman: Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman, 87, and his wife Larisa attended the event. Alex, who shared his harrowing experiences as a survivor, shielded his wife during the attack.
Rabbi Yaakov Levitan: Secretary of the Sydney Jewish religious organization Beth Din, Rabbi Yaakov Levitan was a cherished community figure known for his devotion to his family.
Tibor Weitzen: Tibor Weitzen, a father and husband, was fatally shot while protecting his wife from the gunfire. The 78-year-old was remembered for his joyful spirit and positive outlook.
Marika Pogany: Marika Pogany, 82, a dedicated volunteer and beloved member of Sydney’s Jewish community, lost her life during the tragic events.
