The Toronto Tempo have recently expanded their team to include a new general manager, Monica Wright Rogers. She was officially introduced in a press conference held in Toronto on Thursday. Wright Rogers joins president Teresa Resch, chief marketing officer Whitney Bell, and other executives in preparing for the team’s debut in 2026.
The team is still in the process of finalizing key aspects such as hiring a head coach, recruiting players, establishing scouting networks, boosting ticket sales, and securing partnerships. Despite these pending tasks, the Tempo have the advantage of ample time to set their foundation.
Wright Rogers expressed her intention to prioritize listening and learning from the sports community in Toronto to ensure a successful inaugural season. President Resch initiated the search for a general manager in September, evaluating numerous candidates before selecting Wright Rogers for the role.
Wright Rogers, aged 36, brings valuable experience from her time as an assistant general manager with the Phoenix Mercury and as a former WNBA player. She aims to build a competitive basketball team with an emphasis on an up-tempo playing style and quality performance.
With the upcoming expansion draft and the approaching season, the Tempo are gearing up for significant challenges. The team’s entry into the league alongside Portland will bring unique considerations for their expansion draft process, distinct from previous teams’ approaches.
As the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement nears expiration, players like Canada’s Kia Nurse are strategically positioning themselves for free agency opportunities. Wright Rogers highlighted the importance of attracting top talent to the team and emphasized the city’s potential to support and engage with women’s basketball.
Looking ahead to the 2026 season, the Tempo are focused on building a strong roster, engaging with the community, and creating a competitive environment for players. Wright Rogers is enthusiastic about the prospects in Toronto and is committed to crafting a compelling narrative to attract talented athletes to the team.
