Ticks Found in Various Outdoor Settings Year-Round

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has revised its advice on tick encounters, indicating that ticks can now be found in various outdoor settings when temperatures are above 0 C, not just in tall grassy areas during summer. Phil Wong, in charge of health protection operations at the health unit, mentioned that through a surveillance initiative where individuals reported tick sightings, they discovered ticks in new locations beyond forested trails.

The three primary areas where ticks are encountered include parks, trails, camping sites with dense grass, private properties, and workplaces for individuals exposed to outdoor environments. Wong emphasized that many people have reported encountering ticks in their gardens or while performing outdoor activities like raking leaves, even without being in long grass.

Wong reassured parents that the risk of ticks in playgrounds, including those with wood chips, is low due to ticks preferring damp environments away from direct sunlight. However, he recommended conducting a thorough tick check on children after outdoor play. He also highlighted the importance of reporting ticks online to aid in tracking their presence.

As the local tick population grows, experts anticipate a continued influx of ticks from the United States into Canada. Health Canada has identified over 40 tick species in the country, some of which can carry diseases. For instance, the Western blacklegged tick can transmit various pathogens, including Lyme disease, while the lone star tick can trigger a meat allergy in individuals.

To address the rising tick concerns, the Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre was recently established at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, along with the G Magnotta Lyme Disease Research Lab at the University of Guelph. Justin Wood, a Lyme disease survivor and researcher, stressed the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for effective treatment.

Despite the escalating tick threats, Wong encouraged outdoor activities but advised the public to remain vigilant by conducting tick checks upon returning home. He emphasized the beauty of the region’s outdoor spaces and parks, urging people to enjoy the improving weather while staying cautious about tick encounters.
