Skydance-owned Paramount has successfully completed the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery in the United States for $81 billion. This move has birthed a new Hollywood powerhouse known simply as “Skydance.” The merger has united two long-standing American movie studios and brought under one roof popular titles like “Harry Potter,” “Sinners,” as well as networks such as CNN, alongside Paramount+, CBS, “Top Gun,” and “The Godfather.”
Billionaire David Ellison, alongside new co-CEO Ynon Kreiz, formerly of Mattel, will now oversee all these entities, further consolidating power in the entertainment industry. In Canada, the impact on streaming services is anticipated as Ellison has expressed intentions to eventually merge Paramount+ and HBO Max into a single streaming platform. However, existing multi-year deals with Bell Media, Rogers, and Corus for HBO, Discovery, and Paramount content respectively are expected to keep the streaming landscape unchanged in Canada for the foreseeable future.
While consolidation of streaming services may be on the cards for the U.S. market, industry experts suggest that the relatively smaller Canadian market might not align with such a strategy. As streaming service accessibility remains stable, consumers may face price increases as streaming platforms strive for profitability and debt management post-merger.
As part of a settlement with opposing U.S. states, Paramount has committed to releasing a minimum of 30 films annually for the next two years, with a subsequent increase to 32 films per year for the following three years. However, concerns are raised regarding the potential impact on independent cinema post the five-year commitment.
Paramount’s pledge to ramp up film production spending in the U.S. by $1.5 billion over the next five years could result in job losses, with reports indicating potential layoffs. The merger is expected to have repercussions on the Canadian production scene, leading to heightened competition for available opportunities in a contracting industry.
The Hollywood response to the merger has been mixed, with some celebrities expressing concerns over job losses and reduced diversity in movie offerings. Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has been vocal about its dissatisfaction with CNN’s coverage, emphasizing the importance of the network’s ownership change. Despite assurances of editorial independence at CNN under Skydance ownership, skepticism remains regarding the efficacy of the proposed “News Editorial Independence Board.”
The Ellison family’s close ties with Trump have raised eyebrows, with past events suggesting a longstanding relationship. Paramount’s chief’s interactions with Trump have been noted, including hosting a dinner in the president’s honor and attending events around the merger approval process.
