Shane Bieber Chooses $16M Player Option with Blue Jays

Starting pitcher Shane Bieber has decided to remain with the Toronto Blue Jays for the upcoming season instead of testing free agency. The team announced that he has opted for his $16 million US player option for the 2026 season. Bieber, aged 30, had a 4-2 record and a 3.57 earned-run average with Toronto following his trade from the Cleveland Guardians earlier this year.

His decision to stay bolsters the Blue Jays’ starting rotation, which is expected to feature top pitcher Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, and potentially Eric Lauer. The future of free agents Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt with the team remains uncertain.

During the postseason, Bieber achieved a 2-1 record with a 3.86 ERA. Notably, he secured a victory in Game 4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series and also pitched in Game 7, where he conceded a crucial home run to Will Smith in the 11th inning, resulting in a 5-4 loss for the Blue Jays.

Since his debut in the major leagues in 2018, Bieber has maintained a strong performance record with a 66-34 win-loss ratio and a 3.24 ERA. He clinched the American League Cy Young Award in 2020, recording an impressive 8-1 record with a 1.63 ERA for the Guardians.

Bieber made a remarkable return to the mound in August 2024 after recovering from Tommy John surgery, allowing only two hits in six innings during his first start for Toronto. His decision to stay for the 2026 season was unexpected, as he could have pursued a more lucrative long-term contract in free agency. By staying with the Blue Jays, he aims to enhance his market value further on a team anticipated to compete strongly in the upcoming season.

Toronto had a successful 2025 season, winning 94 games and securing the AL East Division title. The team progressed through the AL Division Series and AL Championship Series by defeating the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners before falling to the Dodgers in the World Series.

The Blue Jays are gearing up for the 2026 season, with spring training scheduled to start in mid-February. They will kick off their season on March 26 against the Oakland Athletics.
