“Rare Smooth Green Snakes Spur Public Monitoring Efforts”

Prince Edward Islanders are once again urged to be on the lookout for smooth green snakes, the rarest reptile species on the island and the smallest of the three snake species found in P.E.I. Last year, the forests, fish, and wildlife division of the province called on the public to report any sightings of these snakes, leading to over 20 confirmed observations.

According to Julie-Lynn Zahavich, a forest conservation specialist with the division, the public’s reports have helped confirm the continued presence of smooth green snakes across P.E.I. and have provided valuable insights into their habitat preferences for further habitat modeling.

Described as “potentially imperiled” in the province, Zahavich emphasized the importance of gathering more information to determine population trends and potential conservation measures. Smooth green snakes are easily identifiable due to their bright green color, distinct from the more common brown or tan hues of the other snake species in P.E.I.

Islanders can assist in monitoring these snakes by sharing GPS coordinates, detailed descriptions, photographs, or videos of sightings with the division, whether the snakes are alive or deceased. Zahavich encouraged public participation, emphasizing that smooth green snakes are harmless and beneficial in gardens as they help control insect populations.

For any snake sightings, individuals are encouraged to contact the division’s office or reach out via their Facebook page. The division is hopeful for a strong community response this year, building on the success of last year’s public engagement in monitoring these elusive reptiles.
