Doctors are advising individuals to promptly seek medical assistance if they come into contact with bats to prevent potential rabies transmission. In the latest edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal published on Monday, infectious disease experts recounted the tragic case of a child who succumbed to rabies nearly two years ago.

Dr. Brian Hummel, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton and the senior author of the case report, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about rabies infection risks based on the child’s experience. The 11-year-old boy encountered a bat on his face at a northern Ontario cottage in the summer of 2024. Despite no visible scratches or bites and the bat’s seemingly normal behavior, the boy’s health deteriorated weeks later, leading to his passing after medical interventions proved unsuccessful.

Rabies, once symptoms manifest, is incurable, highlighting the critical need for timely preventive measures. Although the virus has a lengthy incubation period before symptoms surface, prompt vaccination and antibody administration post-exposure can effectively halt the infection. Dr. Hummel underscored the dire fatality rate associated with symptomatic rabies and the high success rate of preventive measures when administered promptly.

Regarding rabies incidence in Canada, human exposure typically occurs through bat interactions, although skunks, raccoons, and foxes can also transmit the virus. Bats pose the greatest risk due to their inconspicuous bites and potential saliva transmission even without visible wounds. Any contact with a bat necessitates immediate medical evaluation to assess the need for post-exposure prophylaxis, consisting of a vaccination series and antibody injection.

Healthcare providers collaborate with public health authorities to determine the necessity of prophylactic treatment, which involves immediate vaccination followed by subsequent doses. While the vaccine triggers an immune response against the rabies virus, the injection of immunoglobulin jumpstarts immediate virus combat. Mild and transient side effects are common post-vaccination, with rare risks like anaphylaxis prompting a brief monitoring period post-administration.

Given the fatality risk associated with rabies infection, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the minimal risks, as emphasized by Dr. Hummel.
