Ontario’s Education Minister, Paul Calandra, has issued a warning to a school board in the province, stating that if they do not reinstate prom plans for three high schools that recently canceled the event, he will intervene to ensure it takes place. The Durham District School Board made the decision to cancel the traditional prom at Brooklin, Brock, and Uxbridge high schools, citing increasing liabilities and risks associated with organizing such events.
Students expressed disappointment and frustration over the cancellation, as prom is viewed as a significant milestone in their academic journey. Minister Calandra emphasized the importance of prom as a celebration of achievement and a crucial part of the students’ rite of passage. He urged school boards to prioritize the well-being of students and teachers in their decision-making processes, emphasizing the need to allow students to enjoy their youth.
Calandra highlighted the ongoing efforts to reform board governance, particularly focusing on the role of trustees. He emphasized the need for school boards to prioritize students’ interests and not overlook the significance of events like prom. A proposed bill aims to grant the minister greater authority, potentially allowing for interventions in school board decisions, including matters related to proms.
The Durham District School Board has yet to comment on the situation. The principals of the three high schools assured parents that while prom may be canceled, efforts will be made to organize alternative year-end activities that promote inclusivity and safety. The principals emphasized that students’ achievements and relationships will still be recognized and celebrated in meaningful ways.
