“Ontario Ad Sparks Trade Rift with U.S., Ford Stands Firm”

After an Ontario government anti-tariff advertisement triggered U.S. President Donald Trump to halt Canada-U.S. trade discussions, politicians across Canada are supporting Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s stance without admitting any error in the ad. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed support for Ford’s approach, emphasizing the need to make a statement to garner attention. Ontario’s advertisement, featuring quotes from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, seems to have irked Trump, leading him to cease trade talks with Canada and threaten a 10% tariff increase.

Trump labeled the ad as counterfeit and accused Canada of interfering in a pending U.S. Supreme Court case regarding tariffs imposed for national security reasons. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized Ford’s actions, citing them as meddling in U.S. affairs. Despite this, British Columbia’s Forests Minister Ravi Parmar praised Ontario’s ad for raising awareness and announced plans for their own anti-tariff campaign next month.

Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz commended Ford’s advocacy but respected his decision to withdraw the ad, allowing progress in negotiations. Liberal House leader Steven MacKinnon hailed Ford as a patriot aligned with Team Canada, refraining from criticizing him. Ford disclosed intentions to remove the ad from U.S. platforms after the weekend, having successfully initiated a dialogue on tariffs.

As Canada navigates restoring trade discussions and countering Trump’s tariff threats, strategies include regaining Trump’s favor through positive gestures. Former deputy chief of staff Brian Clow suggested leveraging the ad’s removal as a diplomatic move. Carney, during a summit in Malaysia, aims to strengthen ties with Asian nations to reduce dependence on U.S. trade. McKenna mentioned the importance of Canada’s stance in trade negotiations to emphasize its value to the U.S. market.

The evolving dynamics between Canada and the U.S. highlight the complexities of international trade negotiations and diplomatic maneuvers in addressing tariff disputes.
