NHL standout Brad Marchand unexpectedly appeared at a Halifax U18 hockey match on Wednesday evening to show support for a close friend who recently lost his young daughter. JP MacCallum, head coach of the March and Mill Company Hunters, is currently taking a break to grieve the passing of his 10-year-old daughter, Selah Panacci-MacCallum, after battling cancer.
Despite being actively engaged in the NHL regular season with the Florida Panthers, Marchand didn’t hesitate to return home and stand in for MacCallum on the team’s bench. Reflecting on the situation, Marchand expressed his deep sorrow, describing Selah as a remarkable girl who brought love and joy to many lives.
Selah’s passing last Friday deeply impacted those around her, with Marchand highlighting her strength and positive impact. Over a thousand individuals turned up at the Halifax Forum to show their solidarity with the grieving family. Marchand emphasized his longstanding friendship with JP, acknowledging the pivotal role his friend has played in his life, stating that JP has been there through thick and thin.
The Florida Panthers supported Marchand’s decision to be with his friend during this difficult time. The hockey game served as a fundraiser, with proceeds from various activities, including a bake sale and a jersey auction, going to Selah’s family. Paul Graham, president of the U18 Major Hockey League, commended the overwhelming support demonstrated by the community for Selah’s family, emphasizing the strong bond within the Nova Scotia hockey community.
Graham praised Marchand’s immediate response to support MacCullum, highlighting the player’s deep-rooted connection to his hometown and the individuals who have been instrumental in his journey. The gesture was seen as a testament to Marchand’s appreciation for his roots and the community that has shaped him.
