“New Population of Four-Toed Salamanders Discovered in Riverview”

A recent scientific study has unveiled a surprising discovery in the Greater Moncton area, where Mount Allison University researchers identified a previously unknown population of four-toed salamanders in Riverview in 2023. Typically only found in a specific type of bog in Fundy National Park, this finding suggests that the species may possess greater resilience than previously assumed.

Josh Christiansen, the lead author of the study documenting this discovery, described the salamanders as small, measuring around seven centimeters and displaying a rusty brown coloration. Notably, each salamander features a distinctive salt and pepper pattern on its belly, as highlighted by Christiansen in an interview with CBC Radio’s Shift.

Known as habitat specialists, these salamanders require specific environmental conditions to support their respiratory needs, relying on gas and oxygen exchange through their skin and mouth tissues. They thrive in moist, temperate settings with ample ground cover like leaf litter and fallen logs, creating microhabitats that offer ideal living conditions. Additionally, their habitat must include bogs featuring sphagnum moss, as they avoid open water inhabited by fish that may prey on their offspring.

Despite having a broad distribution in North America, these salamanders were previously documented solely in Fundy National Park within New Brunswick due to their specialized habitat preferences. The unexpected discovery in Riverview, while not the initial target of the research, garnered astonishment from the scientific community, prompting collaborative efforts to explore the site further.

Concerns about the well-being of this newfound population have led researchers, including Christiansen, to withhold the precise location to ensure their protection. Described as situated near urban development and roads, the habitat of these salamanders includes a maintained bog within a forested area, offering a sanctuary for these unique creatures. The researchers express a desire to identify additional locations where the species may exist while emphasizing the importance of conservation and safeguarding these urban habitats.
