“New Brunswick Supervised Injection Site Thrives Amid P.E.I. Decision”

A supervised injection site organization in New Brunswick expressed disappointment over Prince Edward Island’s decision to halt plans for a similar facility. P.E.I. health officials announced the pause during a recent standing committee meeting, opting to enhance existing harm reduction programs instead.

In contrast, Ensemble Moncton has successfully operated a supervised consumption site since 2021, with coordinator Josue Goguen highlighting over 300 overdose interventions and the provision of a safe haven for marginalized individuals.

Ryan Clements, a Moncton resident who relies on the site, criticized P.E.I.’s choice, emphasizing the benefits of supervised injection sites in addressing drug-related challenges and providing essential support.

While acknowledging P.E.I.’s harm reduction efforts, Clements stressed the necessity of a designated safe space to prevent overdoses and enable timely intervention. Plans for a supervised consumption site in P.E.I. were initially discussed four years ago but faced obstacles, including public opposition to proposed locations.

Goguen emphasized the Moncton site’s role in preventing fatal overdoses and easing the burden on emergency services. By offering a secure environment for drug use and supplying clean equipment, the facility contributes to harm reduction efforts and healthcare resource optimization.

Despite facing addiction challenges as a homeless individual, Clements remains hopeful for a better future. He acknowledged the struggle of battling addiction while living on the streets but expressed optimism about overcoming it eventually.
