Netflix and Warner Music Group Team Up for Music Docuseries

Netflix and Warner Music Group (WMG) have recently inked an exclusive multi-year agreement to develop documentary series and films delving into the lives, music, and legacies of WMG’s artists. This collaboration, announced on Friday, grants Netflix privileged access to one of the most extensive music catalogues in history, featuring iconic acts like David Bowie, Cher, Fleetwood Mac, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, as well as contemporary stars such as Charli XCX, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars.

This partnership signifies the latest development in the competitive landscape between music rights holders and streaming platforms, all vying to transform rich music libraries into top-tier visual content to attract and retain subscribers. Music documentaries have increasingly gained popularity as a means of engaging fans with culturally significant content, exemplified by the success of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” film, which grossed over $260 million globally.

Under the terms of the deal, WMG will collaborate with Unigram, a production company affiliated with the label, serving as the studio for their long-form projects. Each production will be crafted in close partnership with the artists themselves or their estates. This strategic alliance further enhances Netflix’s expanding lineup of music-focused content, solidifying its position as a frontrunner in the genre with acclaimed releases like “Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce” and “Quincy.”

Competing platforms have also been heavily investing in music-centric storytelling. Disney+ boasts a diverse array of prominent releases, including “The Beach Boys,” while Max has garnered attention with documentaries like “Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.,” highlighting historic labels and influential musicians. Additionally, Apple Music has ventured into creating original music video content, producing documentaries and live concert streams through its Apple Music Live series, featuring popular artists such as Harry Styles and Billie Eilish.
