Interim NDP Leader Don Davies is awaiting acknowledgment from Prime Minister Mark Carney for the pivotal role his caucus played in Monday’s federal budget vote. The vote was a tense moment as Carney barely secured his budget with the help of four abstaining MPs, including two from the NDP. A total of 170 MPs, comprising Liberals and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, voted in favor, while 168 voted against.
Davies, alongside NDP MPs Lori Idlout and Gord Johns, abstained due to their belief that the budget did not adequately address the pressing needs of Canadians. They emphasized that while the current circumstances are challenging and unstable, it is not the appropriate time for an election.
In a conversation with As It Happens host Nil Köksal, Davies elaborated on the strategic decision to avoid an election while not endorsing the budget. Despite the narrow margin of the vote, Davies highlighted the importance of making Parliament function effectively.
Regarding the budget’s components, Davies acknowledged positive aspects such as funding for the Filipino cultural center and local projects advocated by the NDP. However, he criticized the budget for its reductions in services, job cuts, lack of immediate affordability solutions, and insufficient support for healthcare and climate issues.
Looking ahead, Davies expressed intentions to hold the government accountable and collaborate on solutions for the challenges facing Canadians. He emphasized the need for cross-party cooperation to address critical issues and improve the budget for the benefit of all citizens. Davies encouraged the government to engage with the NDP’s proposals and demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively.
In conclusion, Davies underscored the importance of constructive dialogue and the adoption of innovative ideas from all parties to create policies that address the diverse needs of Canadians effectively.
