Mark Carney Clarifies Stance on Gaza Conflict

Liberal Leader Mark Carney has addressed a statement he made regarding Israel’s military actions in Gaza, clarifying his stance. At a rally in Calgary, an unidentified individual in the crowd mentioned a “genocide in Palestine” to Carney, prompting his response about being aware of the situation and referencing arms embargoes. Carney later explained that due to the noise at the event, he did not hear the specific term “genocide” and was simply noting the arms restrictions in place.

During a campaign stop in Calgary where he unveiled his energy plan, Carney reiterated his position, emphasizing that he heard references to Gaza and acknowledged the ongoing situation in the region. He highlighted Canada’s limitations on arms exports to Israel, with exceptions like the Iron Dome system.

The military conflict in Gaza began following an attack by Hamas on Israeli communities in October 2023, resulting in casualties and hostilities. Reports indicate significant destruction in Gaza and casualties among Palestinians as Israel targets Hamas forces.

The Canadian government designates Hamas as a terrorist group and has faced pressure to cease arms sales to Israel amid the conflict. In response, the government halted the approval of new military export permits to Israel, with ongoing scrutiny of existing permits to prevent unauthorized arms transfers. Collaborating with the NDP, the Liberals passed a motion to enforce arms export regulations and prevent illicit arms trading, including to Hamas.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed the suspension of around 30 existing permits for Canadian companies sending military equipment to Israel, underscoring ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with arms export regulations and prevent unauthorized arms transfers.
