Israeli Military Probes Fatal Shooting in West Bank

The Israeli military is currently examining an incident in the West Bank where a 16-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed by soldiers. This action was taken after CCTV footage suggested that the teenager was not engaged in throwing a brick at the soldiers at the time of the shooting.

An Israeli military spokesperson, when questioned about the video, stated that a Palestinian who was suspected of hurling an object at IDF soldiers was shot, and the entire incident is under scrutiny. The Palestinian officials reported that Rayyan Mohammad Abu Mualla was fatally shot on Saturday in Qabatiya, a town in the northern West Bank, during an Israeli military operation.

Initially, the Israeli military had indicated that a terrorist had thrown a block towards the soldiers during operational activity in Qabatiya, and in response, the soldiers had eliminated the alleged terrorist. However, the CCTV footage revealed a different sequence of events. It showed two soldiers positioned on a dark street corner, with a third soldier nearby as a person approached the corner and was shot by one of the soldiers without any visible signs of throwing an object.

The video footage, obtained from a security camera owner and verified by Reuters, captured the moments leading up to the shooting, although the angle and lighting partially obscured the incident. Abu Mualla’s mother, Ibtihal, mentioned that the Israeli military had taken her son’s body away. Subsequent footage displayed soldiers placing his body on a stretcher and transporting it in a military vehicle.

Ibtihal Mualla expressed her dismay, stating that her son did not provoke the soldiers and questioning why lethal force was used instead of non-lethal means. The Israeli military did not provide an immediate response when asked for comment on the incident.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, since January, 53 Palestinian minors have lost their lives due to Israeli military actions in the northern West Bank. Israel defends these raids as necessary measures to combat Palestinian militants and prevent attacks on Israeli civilians.
