The Canadian curling trials, a major event leading up to the Winter Olympics, kick off this weekend in Halifax. Eight top men’s and women’s teams in Canada will compete for the opportunity to represent the country in the upcoming four-player curling events in northern Italy. Last season, Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant secured Canada’s spot for the mixed doubles event by winning the trials and finishing sixth at the world championships.

Both men’s and women’s trials will commence on Saturday in the same venue and follow a similar format. The competition starts with a round-robin where each team plays against all others once. The team with the best record advances directly to the final, while the second and third-place teams face off in a semifinal to determine the finalist to challenge the top seed.

Unlike previous trials, the final will be a best-of-three series instead of a single game. The finals are scheduled for next Friday and Saturday, with potential rubber matches on Sunday.

The successful team will aim to revive Canada’s Olympic curling reputation, which has dwindled since the 2014 Games in Russia. Canada has only secured one medal in the four-person events since then, a bronze by Brad Gushue in 2022.

Furthermore, Canada’s performance in mixed doubles has been inconsistent. Although Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris clinched gold in the inaugural Olympic tournament in 2018, Morris and Rachel Homan failed to make the playoffs in 2022.

To predict the potential winners, Shoreview Sports Analytics analyzed the teams using the Bradley-Terry model, simulating the trials 10,000 times to determine each team’s chances of finishing in various positions.

Let’s delve into the details of both tournaments.

Rachel Homan is a strong favorite in the women’s trials, given her remarkable success in global women’s curling. Her team, including Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, has won consecutive world championships and displayed exceptional performance domestically.

Homan’s rink has been unbeaten at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, showcasing unparalleled dominance in Canadian curling. Statistical analysis aligns with public sentiment, indicating Homan’s high likelihood of triumph, with a 91% chance of winning the trials.

Homan’s supremacy is evident as potential matchups in the final heavily feature her, with minimal chances for others to defeat her. The competition at the Olympics may pose a greater challenge, with Kerri Einarson being the only other Canadian skip ranked in the top 10 globally.

The men’s final promises more excitement, with multiple contenders vying for a spot in Italy. Brad Jacobs and Matt Dunstone emerge as the top favorites, with a close competition anticipated. Jacobs, a seasoned skip and Olympic gold medalist, is a front-runner alongside Dunstone, who has shown consistent performance and success on the Grand Slam tour.

John Epping and Brad Gushue also remain
