Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently shared in an interview how her iconic book “The Gruffalo” exceeded her expectations when it was first written over 26 years ago. Despite initial doubts about its dark tone and rhyming style not being in trend at the time, the book became a beloved classic. Now, Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler have released “Gruffalo Granny,” the latest addition to the franchise.
In “Gruffalo Granny,” the original Gruffalo and his child prepare for a visit from the titular character known for her enormous appetite. The storytelling mouse from the first book faces another perilous adventure. Donaldson reflected on the writing process, emphasizing her focus on crafting a compelling story rather than catering to readers’ expectations.
The release of “Gruffalo Granny” marked a significant milestone as it quickly became the U.K.’s best-selling book across all genres for all age groups in 2026. With over 227,000 copies sold within the first three days, it set a record as the fastest-selling picture book in the U.K. Donaldson expressed gratitude for the enduring support of fans, highlighting the multigenerational appeal of the Gruffalo series.
While Donaldson considers “Gruffalo Granny” the final installment in the Gruffalo series, she continues her writing journey with the upcoming book “Winnifred Duck,” illustrated by Jim Fields. Inspired by the true story of rubber ducks lost at sea, the book aims to educate children about ocean currents through an engaging narrative.
