“From Dyslexia to Biathlon: Jasper Fleming’s Olympic Journey”

In second grade, Jasper Fleming discovered his unique talent. Originally from Edmonton, he had been facing anxiety for two school years due to struggles in reading and writing compared to his classmates. Despite his intelligence, as noted by his parents Lise and Aric, his difficulty with these tasks heightened his anxiety. Towards the end of the school year, Fleming received a diagnosis of severe dyslexia, which he considered a relief as it provided clarity. Subsequently, he engaged in the Right To Learn program that offered after-school tutoring sessions twice a week. This program, funded by the Free Masons, played a crucial role in rewiring his brain and altering his perspective on the world, beyond just improving his reading and cognitive abilities.

Over a decade later, Fleming’s focus is on biathlon, with aspirations set on the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics. The 20-year-old aims to become the second Canadian biathlete to win an Olympic medal, following in the footsteps of Myriam Bedard, a three-time medalist in the 1992 and 1994 Olympics. Fleming reflected on his journey, expressing astonishment at the realization of his childhood dreams, such as making the national team, winning national medals, and participating in the Olympics. His journey emphasizes the transformative power of perseverance and dedication.

Fleming is embarking on his first season on the senior World Cup circuit this year, starting in Oestersund, Sweden. Having participated in six World Cup events last season, including races at the 2026 Olympic venue in Antholtz, Italy, he contributed to Canada’s relay team and achieved individual success. Fleming aims to secure a spot among the four male biathletes representing Canada at the Olympics, with his primary focus set on future podium finishes in 2030 and 2034.

The road to his Olympic dreams began in Edmonton at the age of nine, where his struggles with dyslexia created anxiety around his academic performance. Through perseverance, tutoring, and his passion for cross-country skiing, Fleming’s confidence blossomed. His journey exemplifies the power of determination in overcoming obstacles and pursuing one’s aspirations.

Having relocated to Squamish, B.C., in 2018, the Fleming family now resides close to the 2010 Olympic facility, where Jasper trains regularly. Embracing biathlon alongside other sports like mountain biking and downhill skiing, he finds inspiration in the unique blend of skills required for biathlon. Fleming acknowledges the financial challenges associated with pursuing biathlon in Canada but remains captivated by the sport’s complexities and demands.

Fleming’s family highlighted his exceptional ability to thrive in routine and structured environments, attributing his success in biathlon to his disciplined approach. His focused mindset and dedication have not only propelled his athletic career but also provided him with a sense of purpose and belonging. As Fleming continues to make strides in biathlon, Canadians eagerly anticipate the possibility of witnessing a resurgence in biathlon success on the international stage, fueled by his unwavering determination and passion.
