“Ford Recalls 4.3M Vehicles for Trailer Brake Software Issue”

Ford is recalling over 500,000 vehicles in Canada and about 4.3 million in the U.S. due to a software problem that could lead to trailer brakes malfunctioning and exterior lights not working properly. The recall impacts specific models of popular Ford vehicles, such as certain F-150s from 2021 to 2026, Super Duty trucks from 2022 to 2026, Rangers from 2024 to 2026, and Mavericks from 2022 to 2026. Approximately 590,191 vehicles in Canada are affected by this issue.

To address the problem, Ford will provide an over-the-air software update for the affected vehicles. Customers can also opt for mobile service or visit a Ford dealership to have the update installed. The software update will be accessible for most models starting on March 17 and will be rolled out to all vehicles by May, according to Ford.

The software glitch can disrupt communication between the vehicle and a trailer, resulting in the trailer’s stop lamps and turn signals failing to illuminate. In some instances, the trailer’s braking system may also cease to function. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned that non-operational trailer lights or brakes could impair the driver’s ability to control the trailer, potentially increasing the risk of an accident.

Drivers will receive a “Trailer Brake Module Fault” message and notice rapid flashing of the turn signal indicator if their vehicle experiences a communication breakdown. Although Ford has reported 407 incidents possibly linked to the recall issue, there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to it.
