In a recent study from Ghent University in Belgium, researchers delved into the phenomenon of allogrooming among cats, also known as mutual grooming. Lead author Morgane Van Belle described how cats use grooming to subtly communicate messages such as territorial claims or desires for possessions like blankets.
The study, inspired by Van Belle’s own cats, Fabio and Giovanni, analyzed videos from 53 households in Europe with multiple cats to observe their grooming behaviors. The researchers found that allogrooming could be either a positive social interaction or a more confrontational act, leading to conflicts over resources.
Van Belle highlighted distinct behaviors that differentiate friendly grooming from passive-aggressive grooming, such as body posture, location of grooming, and the recipient cat’s response. Suzanne MacDonald, a psychology professor at York University, emphasized the importance of understanding these behaviors for cat owners to interpret and manage inter-cat dynamics effectively.
Allogrooming is not exclusive to cats, as other species like primates and horses also engage in this behavior for various social purposes. Van Belle suggested that despite occasional conflicts, allogrooming serves as an elegant way for cats to resolve disputes without escalating to physical fights.
