Delcy Rodríguez Sworn in as Venezuela’s Interim President

Delcy Rodríguez has assumed leadership in Venezuela following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States and his transfer to New York City to face criminal charges. Venezuela’s high court directed Rodríguez to take on the role of interim president, a move supported by the country’s military, and she was sworn in on Monday.

Having served as Maduro’s vice-president since 2018 and overseeing Venezuela’s oil-dependent economy and intelligence service, Rodríguez was next in line for the presidency. Prior to this role, she held positions such as the country’s foreign minister between 2014 and 2017.

Despite facing sanctions during the first Trump administration for aiding Maduro’s regime, Rodríguez is now part of a group of senior officials controlling Venezuela. While Trump has been critical of Maduro, he seems to be acknowledging Rodríguez’s leadership over conservative opposition figures in the country.

Rodríguez’s political career, rooted in representing the socialist ideals of Hugo Chávez, has seen her rise to prominence under Maduro. She has worked to stabilize Venezuela’s economy amid inflation and turmoil, holding key positions like foreign affairs and petroleum minister.

Known for her close ties with the military, Rodríguez is navigating a complex political landscape amidst calls for a new direction in Venezuela. The interim president’s relationship with the U.S. government remains uncertain, with conflicting statements from both sides regarding future cooperation.

As Venezuela faces an uncertain future under Rodríguez’s leadership, tensions persist both domestically and internationally. The country’s constitution mandates an election within 30 days in case of a permanent presidential vacancy, although the Supreme Court has labeled Maduro’s absence as temporary.

With Rodríguez assuming temporary power without a specified time limit, speculation arises about her intentions to prolong her stay in office. Trump’s dismissal of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as a viable alternative adds to the uncertainty surrounding Venezuela’s political landscape.

While global leaders weigh in on the situation, Venezuelans brace for potential instability by stocking up on essential supplies. The country remains on edge as the political transition unfolds, impacting both local and international dynamics.
