“Deadly Avalanches Strike Western Canada”

A tragic incident occurred in British Columbia’s Interior as a snowmobiler lost his life in an avalanche at the Kootenay Pass area, according to the RCMP. Avalanche Canada reported that two snowmobilers triggered an avalanche while on a slope under a transmission line in the Selkirk mountain range. Despite efforts by fellow riders to rescue them, one of the snowmobilers, a 23-year-old man, did not survive.

This fatality follows the recent death of a 15-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, who was buried in an avalanche at the Nakiska ski area near Kananaskis. Hazardous avalanche conditions persist in Western Canada, with Wendy Lewis from Avalanche Canada highlighting the considerable risk in the Kootenay Pass region due to recent storm snow adding stress to underlying weak layers in the snowpack.

The avalanche was classified as a size 2.5 on the destructive scale, indicating its potential to bury, injure, or kill individuals. This incident marks the fifth avalanche-related fatality in British Columbia this season, adding to previous tragedies involving a professional backcountry snowboarder from Oregon and other individuals in different locations across the province.

Recent heavy snowfall and strong winds have elevated the avalanche risk in several B.C. regions, with northwestern and southeastern areas, including parts of the Revelstoke mountain ranges, currently rated at high risk. In response, experts advise avoiding avalanche terrain and opting for low-angle slopes without overhead hazards to minimize the risk of being caught in an avalanche.

Despite clear skies following storms, Avalanche Canada warns against complacency and urges individuals to resist the temptation to venture into risky conditions prematurely. Search and rescue teams are experiencing heightened demand following heavy snowfall, prompting adjustments in response protocols to prioritize volunteer safety.

Backcountry users are advised to stay updated on local forecasts and undergo avalanche safety training to enhance their awareness of prevailing conditions. It is crucial for individuals to remain cautious, adjust plans accordingly, and avoid high-risk terrains to mitigate the dangers associated with avalanches.
