While floatovoltaics are uncommon in Canada, some testing has been conducted. Challenges in northern climates, particularly ice formation in winter, have hindered widespread adoption.
Western University researcher Koami Soulemane Hayibo led a study on a floating solar system to prevent ice buildup. By using bubblers to circulate warm water and prevent ice formation, the team achieved promising results.
The technology not only addresses ice issues but also proves cost-effective, with potential applications in various settings, including former mines, hydro facilities, and water bodies concerned about evaporation.
This innovative approach has garnered interest from experts like Ibrahim Dincer, who sees its potential for powering ferries and providing local electricity to remote communities.
Companies are exploring solutions for cold climates, such as leaving gaps between panels and using solar-powered aerators for aquaculture and water quality improvement.
The success of this new technology hinges on commercial viability, with ongoing research and development needed for wider adoption.
