“Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen Makes Historic Lunar Journey with Artemis II Crew”

A Canadian astronaut, Jeremy Hansen, made history by embarking on a lunar journey with the Artemis II crew, marking the first time a Canadian has ventured to the Moon. Following a 25-hour stay in Earth’s orbit, NASA confirmed the readiness of all critical systems on the Orion spacecraft, allowing Artemis II to proceed on its lunar trajectory.

The crew’s Orion capsule departed Earth’s orbit as planned, setting course for the moon approximately 400,000 kilometers away. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman expressed excitement about America’s return to lunar exploration, emphasizing the mission’s extended reach compared to previous endeavors.

This journey included the first engine firing for a crew in space since Apollo 17 in 1972, with NASA declaring the operation flawless. Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator for NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, confirmed the crew’s well-being and spacecraft performance during a news conference.

Aboard the Orion capsule, Hansen conveyed optimism for the future as the crew embarked on their lunar voyage, expressing awe at the spectacular views from space. NASA conducted tests on the crew’s life-support systems before granting clearance for the lunar mission, which paves the way for NASA’s ambitions of establishing a lunar base and enabling sustained living on the Moon.

Commander Reid Wiseman, testing cameras during the flight, described the challenge of capturing images from afar due to exposure adjustments. The crew is expected to capture iconic moments, including an anticipated “Earthrise” image reminiscent of the historic Apollo 8 photograph.

The crew, comprising Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Hansen, will conduct a lunar flyby before returning to Earth, surpassing previous human distance records from Earth. Canadian reporters will have an exclusive opportunity to communicate with Hansen during a live space-to-Earth connection, where Hansen will share insights and answer questions about the ongoing mission. The next significant milestone will be the lunar flyby scheduled for Monday.
