“Canada Considers Tundra Swan Hunting Season Amid Concerns”

The Canadian federal government is contemplating a proposal to introduce a new hunting season for tundra swans in the Prairie provinces, a decision that has raised concerns about the potential impact on trumpeter swans, a similar-looking species that is considered sensitive.

Proposed modifications to Canada’s migratory bird regulations would establish a hunting season for tundra swans in Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. While tundra swans are legally hunted in some U.S. states, they are currently protected under federal law in Canada.

Hunter and retired biologist, David Duncan, warns that a tundra swan hunting season could result in mistakenly shooting trumpeter swans, as both species share habitats and bear a striking resemblance. Duncan highlights the challenges hunters face in distinguishing between the two species, especially when they are in flight.

Trumpeter swans in Alberta were previously classified as a threatened species but are now considered a species of special concern due to significant population growth across North America in recent decades.

To address concerns about accidental shootings of trumpeter swans, the federal government is considering implementing measures such as educating hunters on species identification and mandating the reporting of tundra swan kills to verify the correct species.

Under the proposed hunt, a limited number of permits would be allocated for tundra swan hunting in each province. The government believes that introducing a tundra swan hunting season could offer new opportunities for hunters and benefit hunting outfitters and related businesses.

The proposal is currently in the consultation phase, allowing for public feedback before any formal decision is made. Stakeholders who wish to provide input on the suggested migratory bird regulatory changes, including the proposed hunting seasons, can submit comments via email until the specified deadline.

In addition to the tundra swan hunting season, the government’s proposed amendments include opening a hunting season for mourning doves in the Prairie provinces and expanding the sandhill crane hunt in Alberta. These changes aim to support science-based wildlife management and responsible hunting practices.

The implementation of any new hunting seasons, including for tundra swans, is not expected before 2028.
