A team of astronomers is working on capturing the first-ever video of a black hole, aiming to debunk popular misconceptions about these cosmic phenomena. According to astrophysicist Sera Markoff, black holes are more intriguing than just “pits of despair” as commonly depicted. The team’s goal is to shed light on the behavior of black holes through this groundbreaking scientific endeavor.

In 2019, scientists unveiled the first image of a supermassive black hole located in the M87 galaxy, about 50 million light-years away from Earth. This milestone was achieved using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a network of radio telescopes spanning from Antarctica to Spain and Chile, acting as a unified instrument.

Markoff, a renowned astronomer at the University of Cambridge, highlights the EHT’s enhanced capabilities in tracking the movement of the black hole in M87. By utilizing a total of 12 telescopes, the team plans to capture images more frequently over a specific period, offering a dynamic visualization of the black hole’s motion.

The black hole in M87, due to its slower evolution compared to other black holes, is an ideal candidate for observation. Vincent Fish, an operations data manager for EHT, explains that this slower pace allows astronomers to compile nightly data into composite images, creating a time-lapse portrayal of the black hole’s activity.

The team’s focus on the black hole in M87 is driven by the rapid changes observed in the surrounding hot gas, forming a turbulent disk that constantly transforms over short timeframes. Markoff emphasizes the importance of these observations in resolving key questions surrounding black holes and their interaction with surrounding matter.

The upcoming video, once processed from the vast data collected by the telescopes, is expected to provide valuable insights into extreme physics phenomena around black holes. By studying the unique conditions near black holes, researchers hope to address longstanding debates regarding their behavior and impact on the wider cosmos.
