“Canada, South Korea Finalize Defense Pact Against Major Powers”

Canada and South Korea have recently finalized a new defense pact, following a call by Prime Minister Mark Carney for middle powers to unite against economic pressures from major powers. The agreement, signed after negotiations in October, focuses on sharing and safeguarding classified military and defense information. Ottawa stated that the deal will enhance cooperation in defense procurement, industrial security, and research.

During a meeting, the two nations agreed to update their strategic partnership to align with current geopolitical conditions. They also plan to commence discussions on a defense cooperation pact, which will establish a legal framework for collaborative military operations. Carney, speaking at the World Economic Forum, emphasized the importance of middle powers collaborating to counter “American hegemony” and the dominance of larger nations over smaller ones.

Meanwhile, there is a competition between South Korean company Hanwha Oceans and German firm TKMS for a lucrative contract to provide Canada with up to 12 new submarines. Industry Minister Melanie Joly highlighted that Canada seeks industrial benefits beyond the submarine deal, aiming to boost vehicle manufacturing partnerships with South Korean, German, and Chinese automakers.

Critics, such as Conservative defense spokesperson James Bezan, argue that non-binding agreements do not enhance the operational capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Bezan urged the government to prioritize acquiring essential equipment promptly to support the defense needs of service members, criticizing the delay in improving military resources during Carney’s tenure.
