The peak viewing night for the Perseids is set for August 12-13, coinciding with a new moon phase, offering optimal conditions with minimal moonlight interference. Earth-grazers, meteors entering the atmosphere and shooting back into space, are expected to be particularly impressive this year, according to Peter Brown, an expert in Meteor Astronomy at Western University.
Anticipated to peak around midnight Eastern Daylight Time, the shower may showcase up to 120 meteors per hour under ideal dark-sky conditions. While observers may not witness the full count, a noticeable increase in meteor activity is expected, with bright meteors likely to be visible throughout the evening.
The Perseids’ radiant point, located in the Perseus constellation, gives the shower its name. As for the partial solar eclipse on August 12, although not visible from Canada, regions like Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and parts of Portugal will experience a total eclipse. In Canada, observers may witness a partial eclipse with the moon appearing to take a small bite out of the sun. Extreme caution is advised when observing the eclipse, using approved solar eclipse glasses for safe viewing.
