The Israel Defense Forces have informed CBC News that they excavated a depth of 20 to 30 meters in a Gaza war cemetery containing the graves of 22 Canadian soldiers to eliminate a Hamas tunnel. An IDF officer, speaking anonymously to CBC News, expressed uncertainty regarding the preservation of human remains during the operation.
Initial reports of damage to the cemetery surfaced in The Guardian on Feb. 4, raising concerns about potential harm to not only surface structures but also the buried remains. The cemetery, which houses the bodies of Commonwealth soldiers from the First and Second World Wars, including British, Australian, and Indian troops, suffered significant destruction.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission stated that the primary Gaza War Cemetery in the Tuffah district and a smaller cemetery in Deir el-Balah hold the remains of fallen soldiers. The destruction, particularly in the section where 22 Canadian soldiers from the 1956 UN peacekeeping mission are buried, was confirmed by an Israeli military officer who disclosed that the excavations were concentrated in that area.
Family members of the deceased soldiers expressed distress over the desecration of the cemetery. Despite satellite evidence showcasing the extent of the damage, access to the site remains restricted, leaving many questions unanswered about the fate of the disturbed remains. The Royal Canadian Legion lamented the destruction, emphasizing the importance of honoring the fallen soldiers.
